Golf is a sport in which players, either individually or as teams, use a club to hit a ball into a hole. The United States Golf Association (USGA) more specifically defines golf as, "The Game of Golf consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules."

Golf is generally believed to have originated in Scotland where the oldest playing course in the world exists (The Old Links at Musselburgh). The word "golf" is thought to have originated from the Germanic word for "club".

A golf course, where the sport of golf is played, typically consists of 9 or 18 holes. Players start from the teeing ground of a hole and, using the appropriate club, hit a golf ball towards the hole. The distance between the teeing ground and the hole may vary considerably. The term "par" is used to define the number of strokes a skilled or professional golfer would require to move the ball from the teeing ground to the hole. Par for any given hole is usually 3 to 5 depending on the distance and difficulty of the hole.Golf Balls and Tees
